Latté-Dah History
The Story of the "Slanted Building"
The Latté-Dah building has been around for over 100 years in one form or another. It is located in a part of town known as "slab town," because of the slabs of wood that used to lie around the neighborhood due to Hannah Lay's lumbering business in the early days of Traverse City.
Around 1900 the building was a GMC Truck dealership. Front Street was much lower as a dirt road, so the existing building then was only the base of the building now. Front Street became the first paved street in Traverse City. When this happened in 1906 the street was raised to a much higher level on the west end of town, and a new level of the buidling was added "up" from the base to meet the new level of the road.
Sometime in the 50's the building evolved into an auto upholstery shop instead. Then for awhile, a fish market, and eventually Upper Crust Pizza in the 80's.
The building has been renovated and is now family-owned and operated by John and Kelly Hollinger. Latté-Dah carries a full line of sandwiches, soups, pastries, bread and baked goods, and specialty coffee products. They also sell artwork from local artisans, and Carp River Trading products.
